South side of North lot near 65th St. Limit: 12 Trip Accessibility: 1 (leisurely pace), B (mostly soft ground trails and boardwalk), ~3 miles walking October 10, 2026 is World Mental Health Day and World Migratory Bird Day. As science has proved time and again lately that getting outside and looking at birds provides a number of mental health benefits, what better excuse to get outside and go birding together as we welcome back our winter birds! Additionally, October 10, 2026 is the October Big Day. Over the course of 24 hours, the birding world unites in a common goal to observe, record, and celebrate the avian diversity around us. Come join us! Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge includes a combination of estuaries, tide flats, freshwater marshes, woodlands, and grasslands. The Nisqually Delta is a major non-coastal resting and feeding area for migrating birds and there are few places in the region better for observing them. We will walk the forest and barn trails and go as far out on the boardwalk as we care to go. This event involves several miles of walking on good, flat trails with restroom opportunities at the start and mid-way. We'll spend about 4 hours in the field. Pack snacks, lunch and water. Dress for wind and rain. Bring layers, rain gear, water and snacks. Carpool fees are 65 cents per mile per BCS guidelines, to be divided by passengers in each car. Sliding scale available.
